Head of Roastery Production

Purpose of the Role
The Roastery is where green coffee, expertise, and craft come together to create the product our customers experience every day. As Head of Roastery Production, you’ll take responsibility for this pivotal part of Origin, ensuring that every roast meets our exacting standards and every order is fulfilled on time. With production planning and scheduling managed by the wider operations team, your focus will be on ensuring the roasting team consistently follows the agreed schedule and delivers against production targets. You’ll make sure roasting, packing, and dispatch work seamlessly together, so coffee moves smoothly from origin to customer.

As Head of Roastery Production, you’ll be at the heart of this change, helping shape an environment that will push boundaries and position Origin at the forefront of our industry.
You’ll work in close partnership with the Head of Coffee and collaborate across operations, supply chain, production, fulfilment, and brand teams to align activities across multiple sites. Together, you’ll ensure quality, efficiency, and innovation, making the roastery a cornerstone of Origin’s success.

What You’ll Do
Production scheduling & fulfilment
- Work closely with the Production and Demand Planner to align daily and long-term roasting schedules with sales forecasts, seasonal peaks, and product launches, ensuring plans integrate smoothly with sourcing, stock, and dispatch requirements across all sites.
- Take accountability for ensuring the roasting team adheres to the agreed schedule and consistently delivers against daily and weekly production targets.
- Ensure roasting, packing, and dispatch work seamlessly together so every order is fulfilled on time.
- Adjust schedules dynamically in response to customer demand, sales data, and inventory levels.
Leadership & people
- Embed a culture of accountability within the roasting team, making sure each roaster understands their responsibility for following the schedule and delivering against production KPIs.
- Build structured training and career pathways for the roasting team.
- Foster collaboration and continuous learning while maintaining clear performance expectations.
Operations & quality
- Oversee profiling of coffees to meet Origin’s quality standards.
- Collaborate with the Head of Coffee and QC team to maintain consistency between sourcing decisions and roasted output.
- Lead on the design and continuous improvement of roastery layout, ensuring efficient workflow, optimal equipment placement, and effective space utilisation.
- Partner with all channel leads to deliver tailored coffee programmes that meet the customer requirements while optimising roastery performance.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance systems across all coffee products, including roasted, capsules, RTD, and NPD.
- Monitor and improve operational processes and ways of working to deliver efficiencies.
- Ensure that all roasting equipment is clean, well-maintained, and compliant.
Inventory & logistics
- Manage green and roasted coffee inventories, maintaining accurate records in Unleashed and Cropster.
- Coordinate with the Supply Chain Manager on green movements, the RTD Manager on roasted allocations for ready-to-drink, and the Logistics & Fulfilment Manager on transfers to dispatch.
- Oversee the timely transfer of stock to support production planning.
Sustainability & B Corp
- Partner with the Sustainability Team to reduce operational emissions in line with SBTi targets.
- Contribute to B Corp accreditation by embedding sustainable practices and reporting progress.
Relationships & influence
- Collaborate with the Head of Operations, Production Manager, Ready-to-Drink Manager and Brand & Marketing team to ensure production schedules and product quality support launches, campaigns, and Origin’s brand reputation.
- Build strong internal relationships across sourcing, production, operations, and brand.
- Represent Origin externally through networks and industry forums, strengthening our leadership in speciality coffee.
What You’ll Bring
Skills & Behaviours
- Proven experience in developing and transitioning production layouts, with a strong focus on workflow optimisation, equipment placement, and operational efficiency.
- Experience applying continuous improvement methodologies (e.g. 5S, Lean, Six Sigma or similar) to drive efficiency, consistency, and quality in production environments.
- Solid background in quality control and assurance.
- Demonstrated track record in managing teams and developing people.
- Strong understanding of supply chains, with established supplier and logistics relationships.
- Proficiency in sample roasting would be advantageous.
- SCA training to a professional level is desirable.
- Willingness to relocate to Cornwall.
- Full, clean UK driving licence.

Desirable Extras
- Roasting experience with advanced cupping skills (Q Grader or equivalent), or transferable expertise.
- Experience with inventory management systems, ideally Cropster
- Proficiency in sample roasting would be advantageous.
- SCA training to a professional level is desirable.
Future progression
This role offers a pathway to further development within Operations. Success as Head of Roastery Production could lead to progression into a multi-site operational leadership role, with broader responsibility for production planning, quality systems, and team development. It’s an opportunity to build on current expertise and shape operational standards and efficiencies across multiple areas, while working closely with peers in Wholesale, Technical, and Commercial teams. The role also develops closer collaboration with the Director of Coffee and CFO, ensuring operational delivery is aligned with Origin’s strategic and commercial goals.
